Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand (Kitty Norville Series #5)

Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand (Kitty Norville Series #5) - In Book 5 of the Kitty Norville series, Kitty heads off to Las Vegas to get married and also do a live audience TV version of her radio show. Kitty and her fiance, Ben, end up in a hotel with a gun show convention, which is attended by supernatural bounty hunters. Not a good mix for a werewolf. In between planning her TV show and preparing for the Las Vegas chapel wedding, Ben gets kidnapped and Kitty must depend of some of the people she distrusts the most to help her find Ben. This is the first book in the series that I have read and I really, really, wanted to like this book. I knew I might be a little lost on some details not having read the earlier books but hoped the story would hold its own. Well, I didn't have to worry too much about missed details since there wasn't much to the story anyway. The story was quite mundane through over half the book. Things don't really start to move until Ben gets kidnapped. In fact, Kitty doesn't even shape-shift until close to the end of the book and it was pretty much a non-event. Also, I didn't really care much either way about Kitty and Ben, but that may be because I have not watched their characters develop throughout the series. My overall feeling was “meh—it's okay, coulda been better”. I have not given up on Kitty...yet. Other reviews I've read seem to indicate that the earlier books are much better. Also, there is not much back story summarization that many authors do when writing a series, so I am interested in the beginning of Kitty's story...how she became a werewolf, how she becomes alpha of her pack, and how her relationship with Ben develops. I'll probably give the first book a try and see how it goes.Originally reviewed at LibraryThing
